Scholarship Explanation

Phi Delta Lambda MNU Chapter
Scholarship and Community Ministry
Internship Program

Begining in the 1999-2000 academic year, the executive committee of MNU's local chapter of the Phi Delta Lambda Honor Society approved an annual scholarship, in conjunction with a community ministry internship opportunity, for Juniors and Seniors. The executive committee is continuing to work toward the goal of making this scholarship an endowed scholarship that could be awarded each year. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize academic excellence, as well as promoting and providing a unique opportunity for community ministry.

Phi Delta Lambda is an honor society consisting of Nazarene University alumni who have exemplified academic excellence throughout their collegiate careers. Each year, the society inducts those Nazarene University students graduating in the upper 5% of their class. The MNU chapter of Phi Delta Lambda currently has more than 1400 members.

The $1000 scholarship for the next academic year will be awarded to a MNU student entering his or her Junior or Senior year. Applications for this scholarship must be submitted by April 18 to the Phi Delta Lambda Honor Society, c/o the MNU Alumni Office. The recipient of the scholarship will be selected based upon the following considerations:

  1. Academic performance and excellence
  2. School involvement
  3. Church and community involvement

Selection of the scholarship recipient will be announced in May. The student must participate in a community ministry internship opportunity by providing, prior to the beginning of the next Spring semester, at least 20 hours of ministry service through one of the following organizations of the student's choosing:

  • The Light House
  • Heart to Heart International
  • The Kansas City Rescue Mission
  • The Gracious Promise Foundation
  • The Blue Hills Church of the Nazarene
  • Advice and Aid Pregnancy Center
  • The Jesus Film-Harvest Partners

The $1000 scholarship will be credited toward the student's account at the beginning of the following Spring semester provided the student is certified to have completed those 20 hours of ministry service. In order to be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Must attain Junior or Senior classification in the academic year (this means the student must have completed the equivalent of at least 3 semesters by the time of application). Must have a 3.5 GPA requirement as of the prior Fall semester

The recipient must also be willing to commit to making a presentation or report at the next Spring Phi Delta Lambda annual reception.
