The Men's Soccer team wrapped up their trip to San Diego this afternoon with a 3-2 overtime win over preseason ranked Point Loma Nazarene. In Saturday's game, MNU and Madonna went back and forth in a very tight match. MNU went a man down in the 79th minute, but still managed to get numerous chances around the goal that would have tied the game. The Pioneers took the lead in that game at the 9:16 mark after Lucas Rodriguez was brought down in the box and Jon Lemmon buried the ensuing penalty kick. Just 5 minutes later Madonna tied the match with a goal that came from a turnover in the back. Madonna scored the winning goal at the 69:35 mark after another turnover in the back by MNU. In Monday's game, MNU once again found themselves having to play from behind. Point Loma took the lead in the 38th minute off of a corner kick. They extended their lead at the 72:16 mark. The Pioneers had numerous opportunities in the second half, but could not find the back of the net until the 84:13 mark when Eric Warman scored off of an assist by Jon Lemmon. Just 2 minutes later the Pioneers tied the game with a goal by David Gonzalez, assisted by Lucas Rodriguez. The game remained tied the final few minutes and then just 1:33 into the first overtime period, Jon Lemmon scored an unassisted goal off of a corner kick to send the Pioneers to the much deserved win.
The next game for the Pioneers is Saturday, September 6 at Grandview College (IA) at 5pm.
