The MNU women's soccer team traveled to St. Charles, Missouri on Saturday Sept 27th. In the first HAAC battle of the year, MNU came out with a 2-2 tie in overtime. "Anytime you can get a result in a conference game it is great," says Coach Orton. "We came out strong today and played really well." Lindenwood came into the contest ranked #21 in the NAIA National poll. Lindenwood opened up the scoring in the 10th minute on a really nice strike from 22 yards out. That was the way the half ended. MNU created some really good opportunities in the first half, but came up short.
In the second half Alyssa Howard opened up the scoring in the 51st minute with the assist from Kayla Delzer. Alyssa got in behind the defense and finished to tie the game. Just minutes later Lindenwood scored a second goal from just inside the box. Orton says, "We worked really hard and were able to finally break through. We had several more great chances and once we scored you could see the game change. LU scored their second goal, but I thought we responded really well. For such a young team, they handle this game with great confidence and experience." MNU tied the scored off a corner kick that was won by Megan Reffett. Megan headed the ball down to a open Emily Bean. Emily slipped the ball in the back of the net past the LU keeper.
Both teams had chances to win the game. In the 86th minute Kim Nigh had the best save of her career to keep the Pioneers in the game. MNU out-shot LU with shots on goal 9-8. Kim Nigh had 6 saves in the game. Orton says, "Overall the team had a very solid game in a very tough environment. We just want to continue to build from here."
This put MNU's record at 2-2-4 and 0-0-1 in the HAAC. The next game is Tuesday at Baker University at 5:30 pm.
